A Stress-Free Family Shoot with Kids
How to prepare the kids and yourself so the shoot is a joy, not a battle for every smile.

A family shoot with kids tends to be the most beautiful and the most demanding thing at once. Kids won't stand still, won't smile on command and have a mind of their own. And that's exactly the charm. The most beautiful family photos don't come from perfect poses but from real moments. Here are a few tips to take the shoot in your stride.

Time the shoot well
Pick a time when the kids are rested and fed, ideally after a nap and a snack. A tired or hungry child can't be won over by even the best photographers. Avoid the slots right before lunch or bedtime. With little ones, expect us to adapt the shoot to their pace, not the other way round.
Don't command the kids
Smile, look here, stand up straight. This is exactly what doesn't work in photos. The more pressure, the stiffer the result. Let kids be kids. We play with them, joke around, act silly, and the smile comes on its own, naturally and for real. Your job is mainly to stay relaxed and join the play with us.
The most beautiful kids' photos don't happen when children pose. They happen the moment they forget they're being photographed.
Involve the siblings
When we're photographing several children at once, don't expect them to stand still side by side. It works far better when they share a task, like a chase, tickling or a secret joke. An older child often loves helping a younger sibling, so let them be the big helper rather than comparing the two. A little bickering is normal and often leads to the most honest shots.
Bring a favourite toy or treat
A favourite cuddly toy, a book or a small reward can work wonders. They help kids feel safe and give us something to build the shoot around. Don't worry, the toy won't show in the photos, but it helps us capture those genuine expressions.
Stay relaxed yourself
Kids are very sensitive to their parents' mood. If you're stressed, it carries over to them. So try to take it as time spent together, not as a performance. Hug, laugh, play. It's from moments like these that the photos you'll most love to come back to are born.
Breaks are perfectly fine
When a child gets restless, tired or loses interest, we simply take a short break. They can run around, have a drink, or switch off from the shoot for a minute. We never push to finish the plan at any cost. A few free minutes usually bring the good mood back faster than any persuasion, and the shoot then continues smoothly.
Practical bits
Bring spare clothes for the kids, wet wipes and something to drink. If we're shooting outdoors, keep the weather in mind and dress the kids in layers. And above all, give yourself a little extra time so you're not sprinting anywhere when something needs sorting.
Before the shoot, feel free to get in touch and we'll plan the flow together to suit your family and the kids' ages.
When a child just isn't in the mood
Sometimes a child simply isn't having a good day for photos. They cry, hide behind a parent or just want to run around, and that's completely fine. We adapt the pace, perhaps photographing the parents or siblings first while the child joins in when ready. The shoot may unfold differently than planned, and those often turn into the loveliest photos.
